I made these hand stamped paper flowers to use as embellishments on scrapbook layouts, mini books, and greeting cards. They serve the same purpose that Prima flowers do, but they don't cost as much. This week I sent some Art Trading Cards to The Sampler...Goodness I hope the package reaches Marie on time. My first time contributing was for the Holiday Sampler in 2005 and it was soooooo much fun! The first time I wrapped them all up like little holiday presents. Well, I liked that idea so much that I decided to giftwrap them again this time...I used baby shower paper instead of holiday paper this time though. Not that I think the recipients are a bunch of babies! Haha! Not at all! But rather because I think the sampler crowd can appreciate such cuteness...the paper has little rubber duckies and stuffed animals on it. Lots of the Art Trading Cards I sent were done in spring colors. Hurry up spring! Just hurry up!

It's been awhile since I made new spin art, but I haven't lost interest in spin paintings at all; I have just been overflowing with ideas for mixed media pieces. This is a new acrylic painting on stretched canvas with staple-free sides.

I love the versatility of this piece. It has a really groovy retro look and would look great with Danish Modern Furniture or Any of the Midcentury Modern classics- Knoll, Panton, Mies Van Der Rohe, Saarinen...OR it would also look great with Contemporary furniture...a leather couch...suede furniture...a platform bed...

Colors: Chocolate Brown; Drab Olive Green (Could also be described as Army Green or a Dark Sage Green- it is a really grayed down, brownish green color); Plum Purple; Beige; Khaki; Tan; Neutral; Natural. The colors may not appear accurately on your monitor. If you need to know the exact colors in the painting, I can provide you with pantone numbers.

This is one of my favorites from this series so far. I love all of them, but this one really makes me smile. I love the subtle colors and the shiny metallics (you really can't tell from the scan but the hand painted details on the paisleys are metallic.)

This is another card from the "Paisley Images" series that I blogged about earlier. It was basically created using the same process I already described- hand painting, collage and block printing. The details are painted in shiny metallic lumiere paints, but you can't really tell from the scan. I wish I could figure out how to get better pictures of metallics. If anyone has any tips on that I would be very grateful!

This is an original collage/mixed media piece made with my own hand-dyed papers, plus a paisly woodblock print that I made using an antique wooden batik block from India. I bought that block, along with a couple others, on ebay! They were so expensive- more expensive than a rubber stamp would be- but sooooo worth it.

I originally purchased them for the surface design class that I was teaching because I wanted my students to have some really neat things to use in class. Quite a few of my students used it to create their own T-shirts and garments, and it blows my mind how everyone who has used the stamp has managed to make their image look totally different and unique.

I am amazed at how many different images can be created from one stamp. One of my favorite magazines, Somerset Studio, has even done a column in the magazine called "With One Stamp" that shows a variety of different art projects that were made with one rubber stamp. That really inspires me.

In the past I have stayed away from using rubber stamps in my own artwork because I like knowing that my pieces are one of a kind and original. In the future I might start using rubber stamps though. Playing with these woodblocks has been so much fun that I can see the attraction of owning a huge hoard of stamps and blocks.

I have seen hundreds of different vintage and antique woodblocks but I've never seen another one exactly like the ones I own- which makes me happy. I wouldn't be able to say the same thing for rubber stamps, but even so I think that it would still be possible to create fairly original art pieces using stamps. Just browsing the internet, I have seen so much amazing art that incorporates rubber stamps...

Anyway, this is only one card in the "Paisley Images" series that I am working on. So far there are 10 cards in the series and a couple of larger (but still small) collages. I'll be posting more of them in my blog soon.

Original Mixed Media Collage, Direct From the Artist's Studio! Modern, Contemporary, Upscale, Tiny, Small, Miniature, Mini, Vibrant, Colorful, Brilliant, Bright, Geometric, Hippie, Boho, Psychadelic and Fun are just a few adjectives that describe it. The first step in creating this piece was hand painting colorful dyes onto Strathmore Bristol Board. The dye paintings were created intuitively using abstract expressionist techniques. Then I cut up the hand dyed papers and did the tiny spin painting in metallic lumiere paints. Then I collaged the painting and paper together to form the final composition you see here. After that I added the embellishments- eyelets, hanging fringe with lots of beads, flowered ribbon, and a bright red button. The piece has a protective coating of varnish on it. It is all ready to hang and enjoy! :)

This art card is brand new for Valentine's Day 2006. The base of this card is pink handmade paper that I made. I collaged various other elements on top of it to form the final composition you see here. I hand-painted and hand dyed the papers. There are also small handpainted, 3-dimensional wooden pieces which are affixed to the card. The outline around the heart was done by drawing with prismacolor art markers. There are metal eyelets in all 4 corners (the eyelets have some tiny chips- I did apply protective varnish to the entire piece, but the varnish was applied after the chips had already happened.) The piece can be hung from the attached leather cord. This is a one of a kind (OOAK) original work of miniature art!

This is an Original, One of a Kind Mixed Media Collage Painting. The entire piece is my own work- the collage elements are all totally original; they were created from my own hand painted, hand dyed papers. After I finished the collage I used it as the backdrop for this unique spin painting. The spin painting was created using lumiere Metallic paints, and it is really shimmery and shiny (although you can't really tell from the scan). This piece is truly one of a kind (OOAK). Modern, Contemporary, Upscale, Vibrant, Colorful, Brilliant, Bright, Geometric, and Fun are just a few adjectives that describe this artwork.

Original mixed media painting on bristol board. The background was hand painted with dyes for a vibrant watercolor effect. The spin painting overtop was done with lumiere metallic paints, so the work has a lovely shimmery quality (which is not evident in the scan.)

Inspiration: That dreamy in-between state when you are not quite awake but not quite asleep...

This piece is my entry in the "Echinacea" "Flower of the Month" Show at EBSQ (http://www.ebsqart.com/ArtShows/cmd_76_Exhibition_Entries.htm), November 2005. It is a mixed media collage in an assemblage frame. Some of the elements include "woodsies", glass gems, cut up metallic spin paintings, my own hand painted/ hand dyed papers, and of course hand painted purple cone flowers. The resulting artwork is very shimmery and 3-dimensional.

The piece has been varnished with several layers of decoupage medium for protection. It has a sawtooth hanger on the back and is ready to hang.

The frame was totally different until I altered it to become what you see here, although you can still see a bit of its original texture & decoration peeking through. There is a miniature spin painting on the top of the frame~ it is totally hand painted. The buttons and flowers were actually sewn by hand onto the collage with sewing thread; then the collage was attached to the frame with decoupage medium.

I would describe this piece as Contemporary, Modern, Abstract, Unique, "Girly", Feminine and Fun. Would be a fantastic decorative addition to your home, office, cubicle, or locker...would also make an incredible Christmas or holiday gift for the "Miss Congeniality" in your life.

Original framed miniature collage/painting/assemblage. This piece is part of my new "Youth" Series.

The work incorporates dyes, lumiere metallic paints; vintage buttons and a bead (both plastic and glass); sewing thread~ the embellishments were sewn by hand onto the collage~ Polymer resin tiles with little tiny Guatemalan "Worry Dolls" embedded inside (the worry dolls used to be attached to a barrette that I wore a lot when I was in college~ I think the barrette really was from Guatamala but at this point I can't remember for sure); and the frame was totally different until I altered it to become what you see here, although you can still see a bit of its original texture peeking through.

The paintings that make up the collage are my own original artwork, including the tiny spin paintings~ they are hand painted. The dyed background is my own painting as well; the entire composition is my own work.

I would describe this piece as Contemporary, Modern, Abstract, Unique, and Fun.

This collage is made from a variety of original miniature spin paintings; each one was individually hand-painted. I collaged the pieces together on a piece of plain white bristol board to form the final composition you see here.

My background as a textile designer is definitely evident when you look at this piece; I am fascinated with patterns that repeat. However this piece is unlike any of my fabric designs considering that none of the elements are actually the same; the spirals are similar to each other yet completely different. The color palette was inspired by various upholstery fabric samples in my collection, and the colors are very interior-design-friendly.

This piece is purely about the rich, vibrant colors and the geometry of the shapes as the colors interact. The first step in creating this piece was hand painting colorful dyes onto Strathmore Bristol Board. The dye paintings were created intuitively using abstract expressionist techniques. Then I used the hand dyed paintings as the base on which to create spin paintings using Lumiere Metallic Paints by Jacquard Products. Then I collaged the pieces together on a piece of plain white bristol board to form the final composition you see here.

The name was an afterthought, and I chose it because I think this art evokes feelings of hot summer in Rio, dancing to rhythmic music, and luschious tropical drinks with a squeeze of lime...

Original Framed Mixed Media Collage. This is the first in a series. The frame has an original spin painting done in metallic paints, plus hand cast resin tiles with little beads embedded inside. The collage is made from cut up spin paintings on hand dyed paper. There is lots of metallic paint as well, but you can't tell from the pictures~ my camera was having a hard time reproducing the shiny areas as shiny.

This is one of the earlier art cards in my "Hand Dyed" series. I am particularly proud of this one, and I held off for months before listing it on ebay because I love it so much! The flower centers are gorgeous vintage red buttons. I think they MIGHT be Czech glass but I am not sure. They were in a large lot of buttons that I bought on ebay~ some of the other buttons in the lot were mother of pearl, bone, and czech glass buttons that were mint on the card. These buttons were loose and unidentified however. I LOVE buttons but I don't know much about them! Whatever they are, I think they really enhance this ACEO. The Story behind the painting:

This is the first spin painting I ever attempted. I didn't really know what to expect from a spin painting. The whole thing was my husband Mike's idea! I did this painting before he built a more permanent turntable for me. He kind of rigged up a temporary setup just to try it out.

Anyway, my first spin painting was a crazy experience! I didn't know the paint would splatter everywhere the way it did. Oh my. You should have seen me when I was finished. I was wearing more paint than this canvas was, and that is only a mild exaggeration. :)

OK, some background information for you: Mike & I walk lots of places. We walk everywhere we can- to the post office, to the grocery store (yes we carry all our groceries home! If you ever need a good alternative to dieting, try it!) to get videos, to the bank, etc. So we walk by all kinds of crazy stuff. Seeing the city from the sidewalk is entirely different than seeing it from the window of your car. It makes it more real, more personal. The details are right there in front of you in a way that they just aren't if you drive by them in a blur.

One thing we sometimes notice in our travels- urban decay. Broken windows. Boarded up buildings. Graffiti. Empty lots that need tending. We marvel that this is the case, with real estate prices the way they are! It's kind of shocking to think that there are even 2 vacant square inches anywhere around here...

One day Mike & I were walking around the city and all of a sudden someone launched an object out of a window pretty much directly above us, and pieces of the broken window came hurtling down into the sidewalk and street. That was freaky!

So anyway when I was finished with this painting I realized that I had just painted, without meaning to, the broken windows and urban decay that keep popping up wherever we go. This is NOT a subject I would normally pick for a piece of art! Sheesh, I like flowers and happy things. What can I say...

It's a great site run by a nice couple, Peter & Conni Togel. Conni is a self representing artist too. The Togels built the site to be used by self representing artists only, so no worries about sweatshop art when you buy from artbyus.

I usually add photos to it when something has sold (I have been using EBSQ to generate my certificates of authenticity.) So if you're curious about which pieces of mine have been sold, you can see some examples there. Some of the pieces you'll see there are actually still available for sale...most are sold.
